Preventative Maintenance is a function everybody should be familiar with – and most will claim they stay on top of their preventative measures. The simple truth is that preventative maintenance is very often pushed back and ultimately turns in to costly repairs and downtime.
Prevention is a beautiful thing when you look at it in the right light – unfortunately, most view it as a dark cloud looming.. it is a machine that could be producing or equipment that could be working – and not only is that asset not making money when taken offline – but it is also costing money to take it offline. Not an attractive position to be in – but if you were to budget accordingly and plan appropriately, preventative maintenance can set an excellent expectation which you will learn to rely on, which may very well prevent you from a very costly and much more time consuming failure.. and this normally happens when it is least convenient.
This is just as an important factor in your employees as well. Things may be slow, and the thought of having manpower not being dedicated to the work that is available can be gut-wrenching. This is an understandable mindset, but the necessity to keep your equipment/employees sharp and up to date should not be disregarded. Once things begin to pick up momentum, and work starts flowing in – the last thing you are going to need when your Customers rely on you the most is to have catastrophic equipment failure.. or to find out your employee’s tickets/certifications have lapsed or they have simply fallen out of touch with how to properly follow company procedures.
Now is the time to ensure you are not lacking on regular maintenance internally. Complete monthly or weekly inspections and maintenance, and ensure your employees are up to date on the standard operating procedures they would normally be doing day in and day out. It is crucial to stay current on all aspects of maintaining your assets – and if you are familiar with Murphy’s Law – you will likely know that Murphy never tends to pop in during convenient times.
